Importing to Canada
Importing your Escapod TOPO2 into Canada involves several key steps to ensure compliance with Canadian regulations. Here's an overview:
Pre-Clearance
Before importing, obtain a recall clearance letter from Escapod, confirming that any manufacturer-identified safety defects have been addressed. This document is essential for compliance with Canadian import regulations.
IMPORTING TO CANADA
Step 1 - Register Your Vehicle with the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV)
To expedite the border process, register your vehicle with the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) prior to crossing. This can be done online or at the time of entry.
- Create an RIV Account: Set up an account on the RIV website.
- Complete the Vehicle Import Form (Form 1): Provide details such as import type, border crossing information, and vehicle specifics. Ensure all information is accurate to prevent delays.
- Upload Required Documents: Submit the vehicle's title, recall clearance letter, and images of the trailer.
- Submit Payment: Pay the applicable fees to process your importation.
Step 2 – Notify U.S. Customs
At least 72 hours before crossing into Canada, provide U.S. Customs with the necessary documentation to comply with export regulations. Documentation: Present the original title and, if applicable, a letter of authorization from any lienholders. Ensure all documents are in order to avoid delays.
Step 3 – Crossing the Border
Upon arrival at the Canadian border, be prepared to present the following:
- Original Title: Proof of ownership.
- Proof of Ownership: Such as a bill of sale.
- Sales Receipts: Documentation of the purchase.
- Vehicle Import Form (Form 1): Previously completed through the RIV.
- Recall Clearance Letter: From Escapod.
U.S. Customs: Present the original title and the trailer for verification.
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA): Officers will assess the vehicle's admissibility and review your documents. They will then provide you with a stamped copy of Form 1, which is necessary for provincial or territorial registration.
Step 4 – Post-Border Requirements
After entering Canada, you have a 45-day period to complete the following:
- Pay the RIV Registration Fee: This fee must be paid before you can proceed with the inspection.
- Obtain an RIV Inspection Form: Once the fee is paid, you'll receive this form by mail.
- Complete Necessary Modifications: Ensure your trailer meets Canadian safety standards, which may include installing daytime running lights or other modifications.
- Pass the RIV Inspection: Visit an authorized inspection center, such as Canadian Tire, to have your trailer inspected.
- Receive the Canadian Certification Label: After passing the inspection, you'll receive a certification label to affix to your trailer.
- Register Your Trailer: With the certification label, you can now register and license your trailer in your province or territory.
Additional Considerations
- Fees and Taxes: Be prepared to pay any applicable duties and taxes upon entry into Canada.
- Insurance: Ensure your insurance policy covers your trailer in Canada.
- Provincial Regulations: Familiarize yourself with any additional provincial requirements for trailer registration and operation.
